Heat, humidity could play to G Squared and Chip Ellis' benefit at St. Louis
MADISON, Ill. (June 22, 2005) -- The advanced weather forecast for this weekend's Ninth annual NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals, the fifth of five races in seven weeks for Pro Stock Motorcycles, will put the spotlight on both tuners and drivers.
Although the majority of the three-day event at Gateway International Raceway, just across the river from St. Louis, will be run under the lights, the humidity will be high and the temperatures will be pushing the century mark each day. Track temperatures will be even higher.
George Bryce, who along with partner George Smith owns G Squared Motorsports, is actually excited about the weather forecast for this weekend.
"It's going to be hot and we're going to take advantage of our hot weather tune-up," said Bryce. "We live in hot weather and we test in hot weather. We like hot weather. This G Squared/S&S-powered Buell usually runs well in the heat and humidity. I hope we can take advantage of the conditions.
"Last weekend, Englishtown (N.J.) was outside our comfort zone and it showed. This weekend, we're going to attempt to set ourselves apart from the middle of the pack and move to the front with our hot weather experience."
After six of 15 events for Pro Stock Motorcycles, Chip Ellis, who rides the G Squared/S&S Buell, is currently No. 4 in the POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle point standings with 367 points, 8 behind third, 23 behind second and 70 out of the top spot.
"Chip did a great driving job at the last two races, coming out of what he called 'a slump.' As he explained it, he was like a baseball pitcher who was in a slump and couldn't win games. Now he says he's back. So he confident now and riding well. We've just got to get the tune up right so our Buell can take advantage of the power that S&S Cycle supplies us," explained Bryce.
QUALIFYING: Qualifying for Ellis and the G Squared/S&S Buell begins with two sessions on Friday evening, scheduled for 5 and 8 p.m., and concludes with two additional sessions on Saturday evening, also at 5 and 8 p.m. Ellis begins his quest for the Pro Stock Motorcycle title on Sunday afternoon with eliminations for all classes getting underway at 4:30 p.m. and continuing into the evening hours. All times are local St. Louis time -- Central Time (CT) -- and subject to change at anytime.
TELEVISION: Qualifying highlights for the Ninth annual NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals can be seen on ESPN2 early Sunday morning (June 26) from 12 midnight-1 a.m. ESPN2 will also air three hours of same-day television coverage of eliminations beginning at 9 p.m. on Sunday evening (June 26). The elimination show encores on the "Deuce" early Tuesday morning, June 28, from 3 until 4:30 a.m. Also, tune in to NHRA2Day on ESPN2, the weekly show that gives you the latest information about the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
