McClenathan loses in quarterfinals at St. Louis

MADISON, Ill. (June 29, 2003) -- St. Louis in the summertime is hot and today at the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals at Gateway International Raceway was no exception. Track surface temperature was hovering around 140-degrees when the race got underway at 4:30 p.m. (Central Time).

Cory McClenathan, from Riverside, Calif., driver of the Darrell Gwynn-owned, NY Yankees/Berryman Products dragster, made the best of a hot sticky track when he defeated Mike Smith in the opening round of eliminations. McClenathan recorded a 4.870 second pass to 5.226 seconds for Smith.

The second round was not as kind to the Darrell Gwynn Racing team, as McClenathan, matched against surprise first round winner Scott Weis, smoked the tires and never was a factor in the race. Weis took the win and McClenathan and team began to prepare for the next event.

"It's just one of those things," said McClenathan. "We beat ourselves today. They deserve to win. We weren't ready. We weren't prepared. There was stuff that happened with the car at the starting that should never have happened. We're going to find a way to fix it and that's all there is to it.

"We had the right side of the ladder today and it should have been a great day. But, you know what, we let them have it today. It's our fault."

By going two rounds, McClenathan climbed to fourth in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings. Cory Mac has 657 points.

McClenathan and the Darrell Gwynn Racing NY Yankees/Berryman Products team have several weeks to prepare the dragster for the western swing -- Denver, Seattle and Sonoma, Calif., for back-to-back-to back races. The first in the three race series is the NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo., just outside Denver. The event is scheduled for July 18-20.

Gann advances to the semifinals; third in points

MADISON, Ill. (June 29, 2003) -- In the opening round, No. 1 qualifier Shawn Gann squared off against Tommy Grimes, who qualified 16th, with Gann coming away with the win. Grimes got a big jump at the green light and Gann had to run him down, winning by 18 hundredths of a second. Next up was Antron Brown. This time Gann made it look easy running an elapsed time of 7.201 seconds to 7.314 seconds for Brown.

Moving to the semifinals, Gann faced the Harley Davidson of GT Tonglet. Tonglet turned a quicker reaction time into a holeshot win when he defeated Gann. Gann recorded a run of 7.222 seconds to a 7.235 second pass for Tonglet.

Gann is third in NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Bike standings with 474 points.

The next event for Pro Stock Bike, the 8th of 14 motorcycle events on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, is the NHRA Mopar Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo., just outside Denver, July 18-20.
