Doug Herbert's Second-half Goal: Finish in Top Fuel Top Five

MADISON, Ill., June 25-27, 2004 - The NHRA POWERade Series reaches the midpoint of its 2004 schedule with this weekend's Sears Nationals at Gateway International Raceway and gives drivers a chance assess their situations.

Asked for his opinion, Doug Herbert said his glass is half-empty and half-full.

"On the positive side, the car is running good, it's not blowing up parts and we've qualified for all the races," commented the Cherryville, N.C., driver. "The team is working well together and there haven't been a lot of mistakes. It's not all bad, but it seems it could be better. I guess you could say we just haven't jelled yet.

"After saying that, though, we are going to be halfway through the season and it's time for us to make a move," he continued. "I'd love to get that hot streak going and use the next six races before the U.S. Nationals (Labor Day at Indianapolis) to climb into the top five or six."

Herbert has 505 points and trails Scott Kalitta (seventh) by 70 points, or four rounds wins, heading into this St. Louis-area event. Herbert is six rounds behind Cory McClenathan (fifth).

"I know Ed McCulloch, Ron Douglas and Jim Brissette are working hard to get us to make good runs, but we haven't been able to capitalize and win rounds on race day," Herbert commented.

This race will be run at night to compensate for the usually hot, humid conditions this area experiences during summer months. Herbert has one night win to his credit, the NHRA' 50th Anniversary Nationals in 2000.

"I like running at night," Herbert said. "It sure beats racing when the temperatures are hot and it's humid."

Herbert will attempt to secure a position in the top half of the 16-car lineup during qualifying sessions Friday and Saturday at 6 and 9 p.m. Sunday's eliminations begin at 4:30 p.m.
