Track-Record Run Puts Anderson on Top of Pro Stock Grid After First Day of Qualifying at St. Louis
His Pontiac GTO Sets Gateway Speed and Elapsed-Time Mark
MADISON, Ill., June 23, 2006 - Looking to repeat his win here in 2004, three-time NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champ Greg Anderson placed his Summit Racing Pontiac GTO in the provisional No. 1 position after the first day of qualifying for this weekend's 10th annual O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway. Anderson ran a Gateway track-record elapsed time of 6.692 seconds at a track-record speed of 206.23 mph to edge Kurt Johnson for the top spot. Johnson drove his ACDelco Chevy Cobalt to an elapsed time of 6.693 seconds at 205.91 mph to land No. 2 on the provisional grid.
"It was very tricky out there this afternoon," said Anderson. "I ran low e.t., but it was by no means a pretty run. It was hot out there, the track was hot, the rubber was hot, and there just flat wasn't enough rubber out there on the racetrack yet. We got a combination to make things happen tonight. You've got more rubber on the racetrack from running all day long, and of course the track cooled down. As soon as the track cools down it just makes a major, major difference. Basically we went from being way over center this afternoon to being under center tonight. We didn't think it would get that much better, but it got a whole bunch better. We missed by a little bit, but still looks like it's good enough to get the pole.
"We need a shot in the arm. It's been a little while since I've had a pole, and we haven't had much race-day luck lately either. We need a shot in the arm and we need some confidence. Maybe we can get a little confidence going into Sunday. We'll see what happens tomorrow. We run tomorrow afternoon, and I certainly don't think anybody's going to probably mess with that number tomorrow afternoon, but I think the 7 o'clock run tomorrow night should be just as good as tonight. We're going to have to go out and earn it tomorrow night. But at least we go into Saturday morning with a little bit of confidence, knowing what to do and now knowing how much the track is going to swing from afternoon to evening. We're going to see that same thing on Sunday."
