DIXON AND MILLER LITE TEAM LOOK TO BUILD ON FINAL-ROUND MOMENTUM
MADISON, Ill. (June 20, 2006) Coming off of his first final-round appearance of the 2006 NHRA season, two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon, driver of Don "the Snake" Prudhomme's Miller Lite dragster, hopes to maintain the solid performance that helped carry him to the money round for the 71st time in his decorated career last weekend in New Jersey.
Now, the 38-time NHRA winner is aiming for another trip to the final round in hopes of adding a few more accomplishments to his ever-growing resume: a 39th career victory that would equal racing legend Kenny Bernstein for second on the all-time Top Fuel win list, and a first career victory at Gateway International Raceway. As the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series makes its annual summer visit to the Gateway to the West, June 23-25, for the 10th annual O'Reilly Midwest Nationals, Dixon wants nothing more than to end the first half of the '06 season on a high note following last weekend's performance at a hot Englishtown race.
"As hot and humid as St. Louis normally is, you hope that what we did and learned at Englishtown will apply for this weekend's event," Dixon said. "The track temperatures at Englishtown were as hot as we've seen in a year, so I'd be willing to bet that the things that we did to get our car down the track will most definitely apply at St. Louis whether you're racing in the day or night."
For some strange and unexplainable reason, Gateway International Raceway is the only track on the 21-race NHRA circuit in which Dixon has yet to advance to a final round. He reached the semifinals at the multipurpose racing facility in 2000 and '04. Top Fuel's winningest active racer has been victorious at 19 of the current 21 drag strips on tour while reaching the winner's circle multiple times at 11 active facilities. So, why the struggles at Gateway for someone who's been successful at pretty much every other track?
"You keep going to the track and you keep trying to win," Dixon said. "If one weekend you're successful, then you've won there. That's what we're going try and do this weekend at St. Louis."
