MADISON, Ill. (June 25, 2004) - Ron Capps drove his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 10 qualifying spot Friday at Gateway International Raceway after recording a run of 4.950 seconds at 313.44 mph.
The 14-time NHRA winner drove to the No. 10 position with his 4.950, 313.44 effort on Friday's second qualifying pass after losing traction on his opening run of the weekend and coasting to a run of 9.468 at 90.24.
"After the first run, we just needed to get in the show," Capps said. "Roland (Leong) and the guys did a great job to get us in the field, now we can be a little more aggressive on Saturday."
Capps, who won the inaugural event at Gateway in 1997, looks to drive his Leong-tuned Chevy into the top half of the Funny Car ladder when qualifying resumes at 6 and 9 p.m. (CT) on Saturday evening.
