JOHNSON JR. DRIVES SKOAL RACING FLOPPER TO FIRST-ROUND PERFORMANCE AT ST. LOUIS

MADISON, Ill. (June 26, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to a first-round finish under difficult racing conditions Sunday at Gateway International Raceway as the six-time NHRA winner drove his Monte Carlo to the fifth quickest pass of the opening round.

For the third consecutive race, Johnson faced off against veteran flopper pilot and fellow Chevy driver Tim Wilkerson. Johnson used the starting line advantage to race to an early lead over his new rival, but it wasn't enough to overcome a performance of 5.076 seconds at 292.90 turned in by Wilkerson. The Skoal Racing Monte Carlo recorded a solid run of 5.133 at 291.89 on a Gateway Int'l Raceway quarter mile that reached more than 130 degrees at the start of eliminations.

"It's hard to be disappointed when you run a time that will beat most of the other cars," Johnson said. "It's disappointing because we were on a roll, that makes it tough. Those are tough conditions to race in. We haven't made a run in those conditions all weekend long and we didn't do too badly. We just lost a close race."

With 12 of 23 races on the 2005 NHRA POWERade Series schedule complete, Johnson sits in fifth place in the Funny Car standings with a victory at the season-opening Winternationals to his credit. At the midseason point one year ago, Johnson was in 12th place.

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 26th annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals, July 15-17, at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo. near Denver. The Skoal Racing crew will return to the team's Brownsburg, Ind. race shop to gear up for the Western Swing and the second half of the 2005 NHRA campaign.
