White just misses win in Indy

CLERMONT, Ind. - NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Marc White and the Bars Leaks/Etterman Racing team came just one round short of winning this past weekend's Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park. Despite not getting the win, White left the event tied with Jeff Craig for the Division 3 points lead.

White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., qualified the Bars Leaks/Etterman Racing Firebird second with a 5.755 second elapsed time at 249.72 mph. In round one, he defeated fellow Glendale Heights resident John Reikas with a 5.754 at 218.94 mph, and then took out Steve Addleman with a 5.795 at 236.42 mph. Despite taking wins on both passes, both runs ended with supercharger explosions. The crew thrashed before the final round just to make the call.

In the final, both drivers left together, but White's 5.742 at 250.55 mph just couldn't hold off Cheeseman's 5.703 at 249.86 mph.

"In the final, it just drove through the clutch for some reason," said White. "It was the same tune-up as the other passes, but it just didn't perform on that pass like it did. On the first run, we think it knocked the blower off just due to breaking studs. In round two, it burned a piston and really had a big boomer. I saw daylight under the body for a second it lifted the body so much. I was glad it stayed on. After those first two rounds, I was crouched down as low as I could go in the seat in the final."

"We really would have liked to win to join Bill [Reichert - driver of the Bars Leaks A/Fuel Dragster] in the winner's circle to make it an all Bars Leaks win," added White. "But we have the car running good, and we'll have other opportunities to do that I'm sure."

From Indy, team owners George and Jane Etterman will take the Bars Leaks team straight to Topeka, Kan., for this weekend's O'Reilly Summer Nationals. There they hope to improve on their performance in Indy.

"We have some new stuff we are going to try in Topeka," commented White. "We'll just have to see how it works, but all in all our car is running pretty good right now so we are looking forward to it."
