MEMPHIS, TN (Oct. 6) - With the first day of qualifying complete at the 13th Annual AutoZone Nationals, Larry Dixon posted a time of 4.695 seconds at 307.09 mph Friday night to position the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster in the No. 7 spot at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Dixon began his sixth career race at Memphis with an opening lap of 4.799 seconds at 248.93 mph in the right lane. In spite of seeming to lose power near the 1,000-foot mark, Dixon's pass was good enough to stay in the top half of the field with the No. 8 spot at the end of the first Top Fuel session.

While some Top Fuel teams elected to sit out the night session due to colder than normal temperatures, Miller Lite Crew Chief Dick LaHaie took advantage of the very cool air to pick up over .10 of a second in the final qualifying run of the day. The elapsed time was the third-best of Dixon's career at Memphis and earned him the No. 7 position with two qualifying runs left on Saturday. Tony Schumacher is on the pole with a time of 4.593 seconds.

The Indianapolis-based driver's career-best qualifying effort at Memphis was a No. 2 seeding in 1998 where he posted a first round finish to Shelly Anderson. The Miller Lite/Raybestos pilot enters this weekend's race ranked No. 3 in the Winston Top Fuel points race, 200 points behind leader Gary Scelzi.

The final two qualifying sessions will resume Saturday and are scheduled for Noon and 4 PM CT. Sunday's actions starts at 11 AM ET and will be televised by Speedvision on Sunday with early rounds airing from 2-3:30 PM ET and final rounds coming between 6-7:30 PM ET.
