HERBERT RACING FROM THE TOP FIVE IN MEMPHIS

MEMPHIS (August 20, 2005) -- Doug Herbert drove his Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster to the No. 5 spot Saturday during the O'Reilly Mid-South NHRA Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park. It's the sixth time Herbert will start final eliminations from the top five in qualifying. The Snap-on Tools dragster turned in a 4.655-second and 302.48 mph.

"The second pass today started out well but the tires started spinning at halftrack," Herbert said. "We smoked the tires earlier in the first round today so it shows that we are learning from our mistakes and I would rather have tire smoke during qualifying rather than eliminations any time."

After the first round of qualifying today crew chief Wayne Dupuy decided to make some changes to the car in hopes of tuning the dragster for the 130-degree track temperatures. "This is a real tough place to race, especially when it's so hot and humid outside," Herbert said. "The tuners are going to have to earn their money the hard way tomorrow. We made some changes and I could see the difference and it didn't hurt that the track cooled off a little for the second pass as well. Wayne is just as competitive as I am and I know he's pouring over the data to make sure nothing gets missed before we line up in the first round."

Herbert will face Scott Kalitta in the first round. It will be the fourth time the two drivers will meet this season, with Kalitta holding the 2-1 edge. "Getting down the track is going to be the most important thing about tomorrow," Herbert said. "We might not need a real quick pass in the 4.60s, but it's going to be difficult nonetheless because of the heat on the track.

The first two rounds are going to be especially tricky because of the time we start (3 p.m.) but we'll be ready."
