Line Charges into Championship Contention with Memphis Win
Memphis, Tenn., October 5, 2009 - Jason Line and the Summit Racing team scored an important win on Monday, capturing the Pro Stock title at the rain-delayed O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals in Memphis, TN. It was Line's fifth national event win of the season, a new personal best, 20th of his career and second at Memphis Motorsports Park. The victory also allowed the 2006 champion to move into second place in the standings and gain valuable ground in the Countdown to One championship chase.
"We had to wait an extra day to get things done here in Memphis, but it was definitely worth it," said Line. "For some reason, I always seem to do well at the Monday and Tuesday races. We had struggled a little in the last few weeks, but the Summit guys did a great job today, and somehow we were able to win. It just feels great to win for Summit Racing and all our sponsors.
"Most importantly, we still have a shot at this year's championship. There are three races left, and although we're 78 points behind, a lot of things can happen We've learned some things this weekend, so we need to step things up and get it done."
Starting from the third position, Line defeated Steve Schmidt, Allen Johnson in the early rounds before squaring off against his teammate Greg Anderson in the semifinals. Although Anderson had been the quicker car in the previous round, Line turned the tables in the semis, combining a lightning-quick .10 reaction time with a 6.590-second, 209.59 mph pass to gain the narrow win, as Anderson carded a solid 6.618-second, 209.26 mph effort.
"Even though we knew a Summit car was going to be in the final, it's always a little bittersweet racing Greg," said Line. "To be honest, today I thought he had the better car, but I ended up going to the final and winning the race. That makes two weekends in a row that one of our cars has ended the day in the winner's circle, which feels really good."
The final obstacle between Line and the winner's circle was veteran Ron Krisher, who had trailered points leader Edwards the round before. Although the two had run within a hundredth of each other in the semis, the contest was over before it even started, as Krisher left the starting line 18/100ths of a second early, handing the automatic win to Line, who punctuated his victory by making the quickest and fastest pass of the day at 6.576-seconds with a top speed of 210.05 mph.
"Although you always like to race someone for the win, I'll take it any way I can get it," said Line. "Besides that was the best run this Summit Racing Pontiac had made in quite a while. We certainly want to enjoy this win, but we have a short week with a lot of work to do before Richmond, so we're heading back to North Carolina tonight so we can get to work and be ready to do this all over again in a few days."
