KJ Qualifies Fifth for the Mid-South Nationals
One of the hallmarks of Kurt Johnson's championship contending season in 2008 has been the ACDelco Cobalt's consistent performance in qualifying, which continued on Saturday at the O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals in Memphis, TN, as his 6.618-second, 207.69 mph effort from Friday netted the second-generation racer the fifth starting position for Sunday's final eliminations at Memphis Motorsports Park. After using his final two attempts to gain further tuning information on the challenging Tennessee quarter-mile, Johnson turned his attention towards converting his seventeenth Top Five starting spot of the year into success on race day.
"We didn't make a bad run this morning, although it was a little over hooked initially. Even so, it was the second quickest to the 330 (foot mark) and ran a 6.62. We then tried some different tires for the last qualifying session, trying to get some experience on a hot track with a better tire, and for some reason it shook going into second gear.
"For tomorrow, we'll go back to the combination that we used on Friday to get our ACDelco Cobalt in the show, and go from there. With the Top Four in points all on the same side of the ladder, it's going to be interesting tomorrow, so we have to make sure to do our jobs."
