DIXON PLACES MILLER LITE RAIL IN PROVISIONAL NO. 2 POSITION FRIDAY AT MEMPHIS; CLOCKS FASTEST RUN OF THE DAY

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Aug. 19, 2005) – Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon powered his Miller Lite dragster to a run of 4.618 seconds at 314.24 mph to claim the provisional No. 2 qualifying spot Friday at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Long known for his hot weather tune-up, veteran crew chief Dick LaHaie tuned Dixon and the Miller Lite/Ameriquest dragster to an opening pass of 4.707 seconds at 301.74 mph to claim the No. 2 qualifying position under scorching temperatures in the Mid-South. Dixon then drove the Miller-backed rail to a second solid pass as he clocked the 4.618, 314.24 effort to remain second in the 16-car Top Fuel order. Dixon's 314.24-mph speed was the fastest run on the first day of qualifying at M.M.P.

"For the first run, as hot and as humid as it was, we had the car setup real soft to get down the track," Dixon said. "The car dropped two cylinders on the top end and still put up a decent number. On the second run, the track was tighter, but you still had to be cautious. You couldn't throw the kitchen sink at the thing because it would spin the tires and we would have ended up like 10th. We still had to be cautious, but we got down the track and ended up second.

"Both of today's runs should help us on Saturday, especially on the first run. Hopefully tomorrow night the conditions will be a little better and we can try and pick up and run a mid-4.50."

Dixon and the Miller Lite crew eye a fourth No. 1 qualifying position of the season when Top Fuel qualifying continues on Saturday with sessions scheduled for 4:30 and 7 p.m. (CT). Dixon is the defending event champion of the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals and a two-time winner of the Memphis race (2002, '04).
