MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Oct. 6, 2000) - Todd Patterson clocked a career best elapsed time during the second Pro Stock Truck qualifying session for the AutoZone NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Memphis Motorsports Park today.
Patterson had a blistering 7.485-second elapsed time at 178.31 mph to earn the fourth position in his Dodge Motorsports Dakota R/T. The Augusta, Kan., resident was pleased with his effort.
"That was a nice run," said Patterson, who sets in the top half of the quickest Pro Stock Truck field in history. "The track is in really good shape and the cooler temperatures have helped a lot. The wind actually slowed us down at the top end."
Darrell Alderman, driver of the Hemi-powered Team Mopar Dodge R/T Pro Stock entry, took home the 10th-qualifying position following a 6.890-second lap at 198.99 mph in the first session. The three-time Winston Pro Stock World Champion explains his day.
"We had a decent run in our first pass," said Alderman, who has 27 national event victories. "The car spun the tires a little bit and shot off to the right about half track. We have quite a bit left in this car."
The Matco Tools/Mopar Parts Nitro Funny Car of Dean Skuza slipped into the 16th position after posting a 5.084/255.77 combination.
"I'm glad we are in the show," Skuza said. "But, I'm not real happy with where we are. The car is still pulling hard to the left and it forces me to shut it off."
Larry Morgan and the Dodge Motorsports R/T entry failed to qualify in the Pro Stock category after shaking the tires in his two runs. Despite his troubles, Morgan managed the 18th position with a 6.918/198.90 outing.
"The car moved around during both runs," Morgan said. "We had to completely change the clutch set up for that second run. I think we have found our problem."
Alderman's teammate Scott Geoffrion, who also drives a Team Mopar Dodge R/T, missed the top 16 with a 7.037/198.96 effort in the first round.
"We have a 200-mph car here this weekend," Geoffrion said. "We really shook the tires out there. The cool temperatures are effecting the how the car works.
In other Pro Stock Truck action, Dale Eaton missed the field when he piloted his Team Mopar Dodge Dakota R/T to a 7.547/177.70 effort. The Dodge Motorsports Dakota R/T if Craig Eaton also failed to qualify after running a 7.644/174.87.
