Fuller the No. 1 qualifier at muggy Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Aug. 19) -- Defending event champion "Hot Rod" Fuller is in prime position to rock 'n roll his way to Memphis Motorsports Park's victory lane for the second year in a row after securing his second No. 1 qualifier award with a 4.575-second pass at 318.54 mph.

Crew chief Lee Beard overcame numerous obstacles, including a qualifying session lost to rain, soaring temperatures, sweltering humidity, and a slick racing surface to tune his driver to the best quarter-mile pass of the weekend.

"I've had a lot of success at this track," Beard said. "The late Gary Ormsby gave me my first win here as a crew chief and 'Hot Rod' Fuller was the last. I think we're in pretty good position to help 'Hot Rod' become a repeat winner for the first time in his pro career.

Fuller will also try to become the first nitro-powered racer to win an event this year from the No. 1 qualifying position. So far, none of the low qualifiers in Top Fuel or Funny Car have gone on to win the race they led through the first 16 national events of the year. Fuller plans on shattering that anomaly.

"I don't believe there is any voodoo associated with the number one qualifier not winning an event this year," Fuller said. "When you're up against the best 15 Top Fuel racers in the world, the odds are really stacked against you."

Budweiser will award the Valvoline/David Powers Homes race team $4,000 for Fuller's low qualifying effort.
