Panella Scores First Pro Truck Win by Ed Dykes MEMPHIS, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Independent racer Bob Panella, Jr. took his first win of the season in Pro Stock Truck Saturday at the NHRA Pennzoil Nationals, upsetting number one qualifier Brad Jeter in the final round. The day also marked the final two qualifying rounds, and there were several changes at the top of the ladders in the remaining professional categories. Panella covered the quarter-mile in 7.654 seconds at 174.73 miles per hour to defeat Jeter's 7.706 at 174.80 in the Pro Stock Truck final. The Stockton, Calif. racer had lane choice, and that proved crucial. "I knew lane choice could be the difference," said Panella. "I saw that black fender all the way down, and I didn't know who won. I was looking for the TV guys to see which way they went." "Today we made the runs we should have been making all year. This is especially gratifying considering we did it with our own engine program, too." In Top Fuel, Mike Dunn took over the top spot from Friday's quickest dragster, Joe Amato. Dunn drove the Darrell Gwynn Team Mopar racer to a 4.593 second elapsed time at 315.93 mph in the day's final qualifying session to move to the front of the pack. Larry Dixon qualified second with a 4.597 at 315.71, and Amato ended up third with his 4.619 second pass at 314.97. Gary Scelzi's 319.14 mph blast took top speed honors. Dunn will face off against Terry Mullins, due to the fact that Shelly Anderson managed to move into the top sixteen late in the final session. Her 4.795 second run left her in the fifteenth slot. Both the day's qualifying sessions were much longer than normal, due to an excess of oildowns and engine explosions, as the racers struggled to take advantage of the cool autumn air and tight track surface. Cruz Pedregon took over the Funny Car pole position in the day's morning session, running 4.916 seconds at 311.28 mph. The run relegated John Force to the second position, and Ron Capps came back from almost turning his Copenhagen Camaro over backwards on Friday to qualify third. Gary Densham's 5.341 was good enough to grab the sixteenth and final spot in the field. Pro Stock veteran Warren Johnson marked a milestone when he put his GM Goodwrench Service Firebird in the number one qualifying spot for the 100th time in his career. The Sugar Hill, Ga. racer's run of 6.881 seconds at 199.55 mph from Friday held as the weekend's quickest and fastest. Jim Yates, just 0.003 second slower, took the second slot. A total of twenty Pro Stock cars made sub-seven-second runs during qualifying. Angelle Seeling rode the Team Winston Suzuki into the number one position in Pro Stock Motorcycle, her 7.259 second elapsed time a track record. Matt Hines moved into the number two slot with his 7.264 second pass. Final eliminations in the remaining pro categories will begin at 11am Sunday.
