SCHUMACHER GRABS SIXTH STARTING SPOT

MEMPHIS, Tenn., September 27 - Handling the controls of the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher held on to the sixth starting position here Saturday after final qualifying for Sunday's O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park.

For the second straight race, Schumacher will square off with Rod Fuller in the opening round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Fuller wound up 11th in the order.

"As I said last week, Fuller and his team are tough customers, so we need to be ready to go," said the five-time world champion. "No matter who we face on race day, we know it's going to be a real battle. I wish there were easy rounds, but that's not the case."

Schumacher will be looking to rebound from a tough final round loss last weekend in Texas, which broke a seven-race winning streak.

"We need to start a new streak here in Memphis," he added. "We're over that loss last Sunday. This is a brand new weekend with plenty of points left on the table for us to take. When you get to this stage in the season, it's all about rounds and points if you're going to win the championship."

Schumacher, who is bidding for his fifth consecutive title, walked into Memphis Motorsports Park on Friday holding a 97-point lead on second-place, Antron Brown. "And, it's our goal to leave with just as much of a lead if not more," he said. "We're not looking to give back points any time soon."

In addition to Brown, Schumacher is also feeling the heat from his Don Schumacher Racing teammate, Cory McClenathan, and Larry Dixon.

"They're both running well right now," he offered. "In the end, we have to take care of our own business before worrying about anyone else."
