GAINESVILLE, Fla. (MARCH 16, 2001) -- Mopar Performance Parts, the performance group for the Mopar Parts network, is celebrating the Chrysler Hemi engine's 50th anniversary by sponsoring the Super Stock Hemi Challenge during the annual NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park Aug. 29-Sept. 3.

Mopar Performance Parts will be post a $10,000 bonus to the winner and a brand new Hemi block for the runner-up.

"The Hemi Challenge will not only showcase these fantastic cars, but also Mopar Performance Parts commitment in providing the highest quality parts for our loyal Sportsman racers," said David Hakim, Marketing Manager, Mopar Performance Parts. "With 2001 being the 50th anniversary of the legendary Hemi engine, our sponsorship of the Super Stock Hemi Challenge makes perfect sense.

Only racers who compete in the NHRA Super Stock/A-Automatic (SS/AA) category will be eligible to compete in the Hemi Challenge. There are no additional entry costs to participate in the event and eligible drivers will also have to pass a post race NHRA 'tear-down' before the prizes are awarded.

The SS/AA class has been a playground for the limited production Hemi-powered Barracudas and Darts produced by the Chrysler Corporation in 1968. Legendary drivers like Ronnie Sox and Dick Landy won numerous NHRA events and national championships driving these lightweight, high-horsepower Super Stockers. These historic machines epitomized the height of Detroit's involvement in the burgeoning category.

"For many years, dedicated Mopar racers had a hard time finding new Hemi blocks and heads," Hakim continued. "The Super Stock Hemi cars almost became extinct until Mopar Performance Parts stepped up and began to remake the Hemi engine. Now anyone can build a complete Hemi engine right out of our Mopar Performance Parts catalog. We even offer three versions of a Hemi crate engine for street or bracket enthusiasts."
