NE: Maple Grove Saturday summary

READING, Pa. -- For the second consecutive day, rain washed out competition at the NHRA Northeast Division Summit Racing Series Finals at Maple Grove Raceway. The winningest drivers from tracks across the region came to Maple Grove raceway in search of team and individual glory. On Thursday, the opening day of the event, they got time trials in as scheduled but weather forced cancellation of more time trials plus the Race of Champions presented by Hillwood Sales on Friday, and eliminations on Saturday.

"We knew coming into today that the forecast didn't look good," said NHRA Northeast division director Bob Lang. "But we were hopeful that we might catch a break and be able to get the race in today. Obviously, that didn't happen so we'll use our rain date and come back tomorrow and see if we can get it done."

According to Lang, the schedule for Sunday will remain for what was planned today. Gates at Maple Grove Raceway will open at 7 a.m. and participants in High School Eliminator presented by Luzerne County Community College will have one time trial at 8:30 a.m. to be followed by eliminations in all classes. Officials have not decided what will happen with the Race of Champions.

The Northeast Division Summit Racing Series Finals consists of the top points earners in Super ET, Pro Eliminator, Street and Motorcycle/Snowmobile, from tracks across the region vying for individual and team honors and a share of the cash purse worth more than $46,000. Racers in the High School Eliminator presented by Luzerne County Community College compete for trophies.

Winners in the top four categories will have the right to compete for a national championship against the winners from NHRA's other six divisions during the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif. Every Summit Series racer who competes in Pomona receives an additional $3,500 and they will run for a winner-take-all $5,000 purse.
