BRAINERD, Minn., August 20, 2011 – Spencer Massey today qualified his Prestone/FRAM Top Fuel dragster in the fourth position for Sunday’s 30th-annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals here at Brainerd International Raceway.

Doug Kalitta, who qualified 13th, will be the 28-year-old Don Schumacher Racing driver’s opponent in the first round of final eliminations, which are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CDT. These drivers have split their two prior meetings during the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season.

According to Massey, going rounds Sunday is the goal for the Prestone/FRAM team.

“We had four good runs in qualifying, even today when we decided to try some new things,” he said. “After we finished up the first day in the number-one spot, we decided to test some things, because we weren’t too concerned about today’s results. Fortunately, we actually improved on our times from Friday in this morning’s first round.

“It would have been awesome to hold onto the pole position, but we’ve done better starting fourth than first this year (two wins from the fourth starting position, with losses in the first round and semifinals when starting first).”

The Fort Worth native posted a 3.833-second lap at 323.04 miles per hour in Saturday’s first round, eclipsing his Friday second-round lap of 3.835 at 322.58, which had earned him the provisional pole. His two other rounds were: 3.932 at 304.87 (Q1) and 3.872 at 319.22 (Q4).

“The tune up Todd and Phil (Okuhara and Shuler, co-crew chiefs) are working with is still great,” he said. “I’m very happy and satisfied with what’s happening now and the progress we are making as we approach the Countdown.

“We’d like to go rounds, win this race and the next one (in Indianapolis on Labor Day weekend) to give us a shot at getting the number-one spot going into the playoffs,” he explained. “But if we can’t grab that top-spot in the Countdown, we want to hold onto our second position for the championship run.”

Massey qualified in the middle of his two DSR teammates, with Tony Schumacher third and Antron Brown fifth. Del Worsham, who leads Massey in the Top Fuel standings, and Larry Dixon hold the top-two spots for Sunday’s race.
