ack Beckman Out After First Round Of Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals
Jack Beckman, driver of the Valvoline NextGen/Aaron’s Dream Machine Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car, dropped a first-round race today in the 24th-annual FRAM/Autolite NHRA Nationals here at Infineon Raceway.
Coming out of the seventh-qualifying position, the 45-year-old Californian could not hold off his DSR teammate Johnny Gray who came out of the 11th-starting position.
“We’re not sure what happened,” Beckman said about his tire-spinning 5.721-second lap at 127.04 miles per hour which could not match Gray’s 4.148 at 304.74 mph. “We used the same basic tune up we’d used for some good runs in qualifying, ran well to 60 feet and then lost traction.

“We don’t know what we might do differently and don’t feel like we’re lost with the setup. It was a very frustrating day for the Valvoline/Aaron’s team.”
Beckman had opened qualifying Friday with runs of 4.251 and 4.115 (which earned the sixth-starting position) and followed Saturday with rounds of 4.233 and 4.205.
When Beckman reaches Pacific Raceways for next weekend’s 24th-annual NHRA Northwest Nationals, he will be in third place of the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car standings, 32 points (less than two race-round wins) behind Robert Hight in second.
“This is the first time all year we’ve had back-to-back first-round losses,” he said. “We’re not used to this happening, but this is nitro drag racing and we’ll just have to get back in the groove in Seattle.”
