BRAINERD, MN --- For the second year in a row John Force Racing was finished early at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. Last year Robert Hight was eliminated in the second round of racing action ending the day for JFR and this year Mike Neff was taken out by Ron Capps in one of the closest races of the second round.
“I won Bristol and was hoping to get another win at a “B” race but it didn’t work out. We are going to head straight to Indy and test this week. We have to make this Auto Club Ford consistent,” said Hight, the No. 5 qualifier. “We have the talent and I have all the confidence in (crew chief) Jimmy Prock and my guys.”
“I am looking forward to testing and really looking forward to the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in couple of weeks. That is the last regular season race and then it’s the Countdown. If you want to win the Full Throttle championship I honestly believe you need to go to at least the semi-finals at every Countdown race and we are going to get this Auto Club Ford Mustang set up to do just that.”
All three JFR drivers are clinched their spot in the 2011 Countdown. John Force joined Neff and Hight with guaranteed slots in the play-offs when he qualified for the 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals and he insured that he will finish in the Top Ten for the 27th straight season.
In the first round Hight had to face teammate Neff. Both Mustangs launched and smoked the tires as the drivers wrestled for control pedaling their 8,000 hp Funny Cars. Neff got the win but lost lane choice in the second round to Capps.
“It got better that run (in the second round). That was our best run of the weekend. We will build on that in testing. I want to hold onto that No. 1 spot for the Countdown. The bonus points will be important as strong as everyone behind us is running right now,” said Neff a six-time finalist in 2011.
“I know I am going to test in Indy and that is where my focus will be. The goal is to get this Castrol GTX Mustang back to running like it was earlier this year. We are going to make as many laps as possible in Indy and then head to the last race of the regular season with the goal of getting momentum for the Countdown.”
In a clash of the titans match-up of the first round John Force lost to his long-time rival Cruz Pedregon. Force left on Pedregon but that was the only advantage he had in the race as his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang lost traction at mid-track.
