INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 29) – To remember just how big the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals are, all Shawn Langdon has to do is step into the Lucas Oil/Speedco pit.
"We've always got a huge group that comes to this race every year," Langdon said. "Lucas Oil is a big part of the city of Indianapolis and Indiana. There are a lot of Lucas Oil workers that come to the race. It makes it very special.
"It's really cool to come back from a run and there's a crowd in the pit cheering and hollering for you."
At this year's "Big Go," which runs Sept. 2-5 at Lucas Oil Raceway, Langdon is going to have as full of a plate as last year, when he took the Lucas Oil/Speedco Top Fuel dragster to the semifinals and won the Super Gas crown.
"We lost to Larry Dixon in the semis last year in a really good race," Langdon said. "And winning the Super Gas class has been the highlight of my career so far. This year I'm going to race my own Super Comp car and the Top Fuel car as well.
"That success we had at Indy last year was great momentum for us and a real reason why we finished fifth in the Top Fuel points."
Langdon currently sits eighth in NHRA Full Throttle Series Top Fuel points and just needs to qualify for this weekend's race to lock in his place in the Countdown to the Championship, the NHRA's version of the playoffs, which start once the U.S. Nationals are complete.
The team participated in the open test session at Lucas Oil Raceway last week and Langdon said he was pleased with the results.
"We were mainly there to test some new clutch discs," Langdon said. "We weren't there to throw down any huge numbers. We made four good runs down the track. We learned what this discs will do in the pack that we have."
Langdon said he thrives on all the activity and energy the U.S. Nationals bring, and can’t wait to get started.
"You've got so many commitments during the weekend," Langdon said. "But when it seems you are always moving on the next thing, there's not a lot of time to dwell on the negative if something goes wrong.
"It's always great to see the familiar faces in the pits at Indy, and meet the new fans who may be at a race for the first time. It's great to talk to those fans because they are so excited to experience the noise, power and rumble for the first time. It gets you excited."
