KJ's Double Duty Day in Norwalk Nets the Fifth Starting Position

After issues with water seeping up through the racing surface cut qualifying short on Friday, Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team entered the second day of the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals facing an unusual challenge. First, they were looking to secure their spot in Sunday's starting field with half the normal four attempts. At the same time, the red, white and blue crew was looking to win the Horsepower Challenge, a specialty event pitting the top eight qualified cars from the last year in a three-round race.

Further complicating their assignment was the lack of tuning information on the track at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park. Even so, Johnson got off to a good start, using a 6.738-second, 206.04 mph pass to eliminate David Connolly in the first round of the Challenge, a run that would eventually earn him the fifth starting spot.

Although the good news ended there, as Kurt spun the tires at the hit of the throttle in the second round, falling to eventual winner Allen Johnson, the second-generation racer put the events of the day behind him, and immediately turned his attention back to final eliminations and maintaining his lead in the championship points standings.

"In the second round of the Horsepower Challenge, we ran right after the fuel cars, which I think was an issue for us, as the car spun and went right. We had backed it down in two different areas after the first round, which should have made it soft, but it didn't hug a thing when I let the clutch out. It just sat there and spun.

"Maybe today was a blessing. We'll have to run behind the fuel cars tomorrow, so we know we're going to have to make a change. We will take what we learned today, regroup and get after it, doing what we need to get our ACDelco Cobalt down the racetrack."
