WJ Will Start Seventh in Norwalk

With their number of qualifying attempts for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals cut in half following the cancellation of Friday's action due to issues with the racetrack in Norwalk, Ohio, Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Pontiac GXP Racing team knew they would have to make the most of any opportunity presented during Saturday's sessions. Despite not having lane choice for the first round of the K&N Horsepower Challenge Johnson made one of the best passes in the less-preferred right hand lane at 6.754-seconds, 205.98 mph, but still fell a few thousandths of a second shy of beating his opponent across the finish line.

Undaunted, the team turned their attention towards gathering information for Sunday's final eliminations, coming back on their final attempt with a 6.740-second elapsed time and a class-leading top speed of 206.10 mph, to earn the seventh starting position.

"We didn't have lane choice for the first round of the Challenge, and at that point in time, the left lane was a little quicker. We did the best we could with what we were given to work with, and it wasn't a bad run, but things just didn't go our way.

"In the afternoon, thinking it was pretty much a throwaway run we only changed about 35 or 36 things on our GM Performance Parts GXP, and picked up eleven thousandths on e.t. and a tenth of a mile and hour on top speed. Now we have to figure out which things did some good and which didn't help us on a run that wasn't all that pretty.

"Of course, we could always go back to what we used in the first round, but there's no reason to be conservative. We'll go through the data, probably make another thirty-five or forty changes tomorrow morning, and go for it."
