DINWIDDLE, Va. -- To win a NHRA Winston Drag Racing national event takes consistency and a little luck. Top Fuel dragster pilot Paul Romine and his CARQUEST Auto Parts team will be looking for both April 24-26 at the 4th annual NHRA Pennzoil Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park.

“To get in the winner’s circle at the end of the day on Sunday takes a car that strings together consistent runs while also getting a break or two along the way,” Romine said. “That’s how we won four IHRA events last season. With a combination that’s competitive in NHRA, which I think we have, there’s no reason why we can’t go rounds with the CARQUEST dragster and get an opportunity to win an event.”

In three NHRA national events appearances this season, the CARQUEST team led by nitro wizard Clayton Harris has proven it is on the right track to a combination which can lead to a NHRA national event win. The team’s incremental times in the first 1/8-mile of the track have been with the top teams. On his way to a runner-up finish at the NHRA Winston Invitational three weeks ago, Romine recorded elapsed times of 4.68, 4.66, and 4.74 while never recording a speed faster than 295 miles-per-hour.

“Right now we have a car that is killer in the first half of the quarter-mile,” Romine said. “Once we get the car to run the last 660-feet like the first half of the track, we’ll have a car that can play.”

Romine will find out if he has a car that can play this weekend at Virginia Motorsports Park, a track where he has tasted success in the past in both a nostalgia and conventional Top Fuel dragster. In 1996 at the Super Stock Reunion held at Virginia Motorsports Park, Romine won the nostalgia Top Fuel dragster title. Last season at the Pennzoil Nationals, he defeated five-time NHRA World Champion Joe Amato in the opening round of eliminations for his first NHRA round win.

Qualifying sessions for the Pennzoil Nationals are scheduled for Friday, April 24 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. (EDT) and Saturday, April 25 at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Final eliminations are set to begin Sunday, April 26 at 11 a.m.

ESPN2 will show two hours of same-day qualifying highlights from the Pennzoil Nationals on April 25 at 7 p.m. (EDT). It will televise two hours of final elimination highlights and live final round coverage on April 26 at 4 p.m.
