Dixon and Miller Lite Team Return to Site of Two-Time Champion's First Career Victory as Driver Looks to Reach Another Milestone.
CHANDLER, Ariz. (March 1, 2004) -- Two-time consecutive NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon has amassed many significant accomplishments in his nine seasons as driver of Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite dragster--from winning the 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year award to becoming the fourth winningest driver in the history of the sport's premier category.
The 33-time NHRA event winner looks to reach another milestone this weekend (March 5-7) at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix, as Dixon nears his 500th round of competition. Dixon, who won his first career race at F.I.R. in 1995, enters the 20th running of the CSK Nationals with 497 rounds of NHRA competition, having won 336 rounds for a .676 winning percentage.
"If that is something that we're to accomplish this weekend in Phoenix, I would be way more excited about getting to round No. 501 as opposed to just 500 because then we'd be in the final round racing for another event title," Dixon said. "Personally for me, it's just another number. We want to win races and if you do that, then rounds will add up."
Dixon and the Dick LaHaie-led Miller Lite team will sport a special one-race paint scheme featuring both Dixon and Miller Racing teammate Rusty Wallace in conjunction with Miller's 'Great Moments in Miller Racing' promotion that features both champion drivers on 24-ounce cans of Miller Lite and MGD.
"The car looks really cool," Dixon said. "When you see a rendering it's only a few inches big, so to see the life-sized dragster is neat. I'm happy with the way the it turned out. I think the Miller Lite and MGD cans, along with the die cast of our dragster is something collectors will dig."
Dixon looks to rebound at F.I.R., a track where the Miller Lite crew spent five days testing and preparing for the 2004 NHRA season in early February and a facility that has seen Dixon post runner-up finishes the last two years. Dixon and the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite team aim for a third successive visit to the money round in Phoenix, but with a different result this time around.
"We only have five full runs on this new combination that we're running this year," Dixon said. "The guys that we're racing and competing against have six months on us. So, we have a little catching up to do.
"You go into every race trying to win and we're going to try and do that at Phoenix. Dick LaHaie and the guys will work on the car and I'll work on my driving and we'll see if we can come up with a better result at Phoenix."
