Lucas Oil team ready for Phoenix eliminations; Langdon qualifies sixth in Top Fuel, Morgan 13th in Pro Stock

PHOENIX (Feb. 20) -- During qualifying through the first two races of the season, Shawn Langdon main goal with his Lucas Oil/Speedco Top Fuel dragster has been to be consistent and qualify in the top half of the field.

Through an abbreviated qualifying session at the 26th annual Arizona NHRA Nationals, Langdon and his crew have been able to reach those goals.

The second-year pro ran a 3.857-second pass at 310.98 mph during a rain shortened Saturday of qualifying at Firebird International Raceway, which was good enough for sixth place in the 16-car field. The downside is that he'll be running teammate Morgan Lucas in the opening round.

"The car has been running great, we made it down the track all three runs," Langdon said. "It made nice, clean runs. Last night, we had a little parts failure, but it was still running really good. We've got the potential to run with the top guys. We've got our consistency back."

The one damper to the situation is having to face his teammate.

"It's bad we've got to run Morgan," Langdon said. "But we've got to treat him like any other competitor. We've got to get the round wins and not fall behind in the points. It is what it is. We've got to do our best for the fans and for Lucas Oil.

"Last time we faced each other he beat me by five-thousandths of a second. Hopefully, I'll be able to get him by five-thousandths this time. I know we'll have a good race."

Larry Morgan gave it a valiant effort but did not improve in the lone qualifying session of the day when he piloted the Lucas Oil Pro Stock Mustang to a 6.71 at 194 mph. His qualifying best of 6.663 at 207.05 mph was good for a start from the No. 13 position, and the veteran racer will take on Mopar campaigner Allen Johnson in the first round of Sunday's eliminations.

The track threw the Pro Stockers a few curve balls during qualifying, and two different drivers -- Gordie Rivera and Vinnie Deceglie -- lost control and crashed. Fortunately, neither man was hurt and Morgan was able to get his Lucas Oil entry from point A to point B each pass, albeit a bit off the numbers he had hoped to see.

"We feel we should have gone 6.63 on that last run," Morgan said. "I think we're okay, we just need to make better runs, and the track was not good today.

"For Lucas Oil, Ford, and Summit, we're hanging right in there. We just need to get a lucky day. We may have it tomorrow. I'm real happy for everybody involved and all the people working so hard for me to make this car run well. To come to a track that's not as good as we think it should be, we've done alright."
