WJ Will Roll Off Third in Phoenix
With Friday's qualifying sessions at the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals cancelled due to rain, Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Pontiac Racing team knew they would have only two opportunities to earn a spot in Sunday's starting field in Phoenix, AZ. Not wasting any time, The Professor blasted down the quarter-mile in 6.638 seconds with a top speed of 208.42 mph, on his first attempt, claiming the third starting position. After closing out his qualifying effort with a strong 6.648-second run, WJ immediately focused his attention on scoring his fourth win in the Arizona desert.
"We made two good runs today, and are fairly happy to qualify third, but we're only truly satisfied if we're on top. Still, it was another step in the right direction, so we'll keep beating on this old hot rod until it submits.
"We'll take the data from today's runs and see what we have to work with, making whatever adjustments we feel are necessary to adapt to any changes in the track or atmospheric conditions. I feel our GM Performance Parts Pontiac can be right there with the leaders, so if we can wake up the driver, we should be fine."
