Osborne & Alderman in Top Half

POMONA, Calif. (July 6, 2001) - It was a stellar final day of qualifying for Mark Osborne and Darrell Alderman for tomorrow's Pep Boys 50th Anniversary Nationals at the historic Pomona Raceway. It marked the first time this season, and the first time with the new Hemi engine that the Mopar Parts Pro Stockers qualified in the top half of the field.

Mark Osborne, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge R/T Pro Stock machine, drove to his best qualifying effort of the season in fifth with a 6.950-second elapsed time at 198.61 mph. Osborne will face off against Ron Krisher in round one.

"We went back and looked at all of our notes from prior races," Osborne said. "We looked at the notes from the start of the year when Darrell was really running well. We kind of tweaked it up on my car and hit everything well. Crew Chief Mark Ingersoll and (car owner) David Nickens did a great job tonight."

Osborne's teammate and three-time Winston Pro Stock World Champion Alderman got back on track with a 6.952-second lap at 198.96 mph, garnering the sixth-qualifying position. The Morehead, Ky. resident takes on defending Pro Stock World Champion Jeg Coughlin, Jr. in the first round.

"It look like we've got it back on track," Alderman quoted. "I think we could have run a little quicker because the clutch was a little too much for the track conditions. We're looking forward to tomorrow.

"The changes to the car have really turned this thing around," Alderman continued. "We have the gear ratios and the tires the same from Las Vegas earlier this year, and it worked out in these conditions."

Skuza Maintains Lane Choice

The Mopar Parts Dodge R/T Nitro Funny Car of Dean Skuza collected the sixth position with a 4.879-second elapsed time at 306.33 mph, which he ran during the second session Thursday night.

Skuza, who ran a solid 4.950-second lap in the heat of the day during the third session, will take on Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations.

"On the last run, we thought we could have safely run an 4.800-second run," said Skuza, discussing a tire-smoking final qualifying effort. "It wasn't that much hopped up from last night.

"We have lane choice and that's going to help," Skuza continued. "Its such a fresh track here and there's not a lot of rubber down on it. NHRA did a hell of a job dragging it and putting a lot of glue down, but after you get a lot of cars on it like we had, it starts peeling up. They've done a great job with the track because they haven't had a lot of times on it. They basically tried to take a parking lot and make a drag strip out of it. They don't run a lot of times on it throughout the season, and the track is in tremendous shape from where it's been. I think lane choice is really going to help tomorrow."

Morgan Grabs 15th

Larry Morgan improved his elapsed time in the Hemi-powered Dodge Motorsports R/T Pro Stock entry to nab the 15th position. Morgan clicked off a 6.992-second elapsed time at 196.62 mph, earning the Newark, Ohio resident a round one match up with number two qualifier Kurt Johnson.

"How we stayed in, I'll never know," said Morgan, who squeaked in on his last qualifying effort. "We made a pretty good run on that one. To be honest with you, I can't wait for my new Pro Stock Neon. We know its going to be three-hundredths better and we just can't wait to get it.

"I'm happy that all three Dodge's are in," Morgan continued. "And we're just real happy with that right now. All the guys did a good job and everybody did their jobs."
