Kalitta ready to start 2003 with a win at Winternationals.

Pomona, CA, Feb. 3, 2003 -- Drag racing fans around the world are collectively breathing a sigh of relief. The off-season is finally finished. The air is right for the addition of a twinge of nitro and a heavy dose of burning rubber in Southern Calif. The competitors of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series take to the famed quarter-mile track of Pomona Raceway at Fairplex for the 43rd annual running of the K&N Filters Winternationals, Feb. 6-9, to start the 2003 season.

Driver Doug Kalitta and the Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster team are anxious to get their entry back on the racetrack. After finishing fourth in championship points last season, the team has a very heavy chip on its shoulder from what they thought was a good season, but not up to their potential. This year, the POWERade Top Fuel Championship is the only acceptable finish.

Co-crew chief Jim Oberhofer said, "Our Mac Tools team is eager to set right what we did wrong last year. We want to win a lot and win early this year. Last season we started really slow, but we will not do that again this season. We saw some awesome numbers from our Mac Tools dragster during testing in Las Vegas this past weekend, so we are confident we are ready to go."

In addition to their winning attitude, the team is proud to be able to offer a new hospitality area for invited guests at all 23 NHRA POWERade national events in 2003.

"This season looks like it is going to fun and competitive for our Mac Tools team. There are so many teams out there with a good chance of winning the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel Championship. I just hope that we get the performance we expect from our racecar. A little luck every now and then would be nice too," Kalitta admitted.

The 2002 season ended with some unfinished business due to persistent bad weather at the NHRA Finals last year. The Budweiser Shootout bonus race for prize money only has been re-scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8. Since his rookie season in 1998, Kalitta has made the final round of the Budweiser Shootout three times and won the special event in his first season to become only the fifth rookie to accomplish the feat.
