McClenathan fourth at Finals as rain washes out Friday's and Saturday's qualifying and Budweiser Shootout.
POMONA, Calif. -- The first winter storm of the season washed out Friday's and Saturday's qualifying for the season-final 38th annual NHRA Automobile Club of Southern California Finals at Pomona Raceway and the Budweiser Shootout at Pomona, a special race-within-a-race bonus event for Top Fuel drivers.
The qualifying ladders for all professional classes will be set by elapsed time (E.T.) recorded in Thursday's qualifying session and by the NHRA rulebook governing the insertion into the field of competitors which hold a position in the Top 10 in the NHRA POWERade point standings. That rule allows for provisional starting spots for any top 10 driver who has not qualified after only one qualifying session has been completed and extenuating circumstances, such as weather, prevent the remaining scheduled qualifying sessions from being run
Said Graham Light, senior vice president of NHRA racing operations, "With regards to qualifying, we established a couple of scenarios a couple of years ago if we had one or no qualifying runs. Here we have one run in, but our procedure clearly says the top 10 drivers in each category will be assured a starting position in the field."
As a result, Cory McClenathan, from Anaheim, Calif., driver of the Henkelman & Baca Berryman B-12 Chemtooler Top Fuel Dragster, has claimed the fourth position on the qualifying ladder for Sunday's eliminations.
McClenathan, in fifth place in the NHRA POWERade point standings entering this event, clicked off a pass of 4.615 seconds at 320.28 mph in the first and only qualifying session on Thursday to earn the #4 qualifying spot. Needing a semifinal or final round finish to have an opportunity at advancing to either the third or fourth spot in the final point standings, McClenathan will face John Smith, who qualified 13th with a single run of 5.560 seconds at 242.23 mph.
The pair has met five times in their careers with McClenathan winning four, all in 2002.
The Budweiser Shootout, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, during the season-opening 2003 K&N Filters Winternationals.
