Craig Treble Wins NHRA Season Finale
Pomona CA -- Sunday Post Race: Craig Treble ended the 2003 NHRA Pro Stock Bike season in convincing fashion, winning his second in a row, both over reigning NHRA POWERade Champion Angelle Savoie.
At the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, Treble followed nearly the same script as his last event win in Las Vegas. The Matco Tools / Nitro Fish team again qualified No. 1, set the Pomona Raceway track record for Pro Stock Bikes, and won the event.
"I really can't tell you how happy I am to end the year like this. The last two races have been nearly perfect, all thanks to the bike and motors I might add." Said Treble "Matt Hines chassis as the Matco Tools / Nitro Fish bike went unbeaten, I am pretty happy about that."
Treble had spent the 2003 season on a few different bikes before borrowing the '02 ride from the Vance & Hines team right before Las Vegas. "We literally had to brush the dust off this bike when we dragged it out of the corner of the shop at Vance & Hines. We painted it, did some minor testing, then went on to the last two races of the season."
The Matco Tools / Nitro Fish team had nearly everything go their way in Pomona, running low elapsed time and best MPH of the race. Of the eight passes the Pro Stock Bikes ran including qualifying, Treble's bike was quickest in five of the eight runs. "I've been saying this since I started racing Pro Stock Bikes. Vance & Hines motors make a ton of power, and my job is to figure out how to use it to it's potential."
"If I would have had this bike under me earlier, I know our season wouldn't have been as rocky as it was, and who knows, we might have been able to pick up that $10,000 for being the first Pro Stock Bike in the 6's." Said Treble referring to the inaugural spot in the Mickey Thompson 6 Second Club which is still up for grabs.
The perfect season ending did have one stumble on the way to the podium. "While we were working on the bike in the trailer, we missed something with the carburetors before we put the body on the bike, that could have cost us the race. We fortunately won the round, but lost lane choice for the final and that is what could have done us in."
"Luckily we found the problem and decided to push the motor in the final against Angelle. We ran a 7.129 at 184.07 mph and that should have been quicker, but I saw a red light come on when we left the starting line and I missed a couple of shift points looking at the scoreboards to see which one of us it was."
The win moved Craig Treble from sixth to fifth in NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Bike points.
So what is the status of the Matco Tools / Nitro Fish borrowed Matt Hines bike for next season? "Well honestly I want to switch to a Vance & Hines Pro Stock Harley Davidson for 2004, and that could happen, but the budget is about twice what it is to run a Suzuki at this point. I think that the Harley's are where this class is going, and I want to be involved early in that change."
"If we can come up with the funding for racing a Harley, it will happen in 2004"
