Pontiac's Greg Anderson Leads Pro Stock After First Day of Time Trials at NHRA Finals

Del Worsham runs Career-Best E.T. in Chevy Monte Carlo - leads Funny Car

With one round of time trials completed for the 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California Finals, Greg Anderson is the No. 1 qualifier in Pro Stock after driving the Summit Racing Pontiac GTO to a 6.677 e.t. at 205.94 mph. Anderson was the race winner and No. 1 qualifier for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals here at Pomona Raceway back in February, and is looking to nail down his 12th raceday pole this year.

"We're not under any illusion that we were that much quicker than the rest of the field," said Anderson. "We just did a better job that session. It's another feather in the cap for our two crew chiefs, Rob Downing and Jeff Perley, and the great team behind me. That's why we're going to finish first and second in the championship this year.

"We're having fun this weekend. The pressure's off and we can come and have fun - you don't get that many opportunities to do that. Jason (Line) and I are locked into our spots, we're going to try and qualify one and two, maybe win the race, and go out with a bang. So far we're right on schedule."

Anderson is a two-time winner of the NHRA Finals (2003-04), and has been No. 1 qualifier of this event twice (2003-04). He has also been top qualifier at the Winternationals twice (2004, 2006).

"We love these GTOs - they're great, great racecars and the best we've ever had," said Anderson when asked about his prized Pontiac. "And it's not just the aerodynamics. They have great balance from front to rear, and obviously they're real slippery, but they're very stable all the way down the racetrack. GM did a great job when they designed this package. Of all the cars we've had in the last 10 years, they've all gotten better - hats off to GM. They've been great partners of our KB Racing team and maybe we can give them another championship next year.

"The weather's going to get better every day, the racetrack's going to get better, and the rest of these teams are going to adapt. It should culminate on Saturday morning. That's why it's good to hit it straight on right off the bat. Jason and I made the two best runs out there. Now we can go back, make maybe one or two more changes and hopefully improve. So far so good."

Del Worsham ran a career-best e.t. of 4.712 seconds in the Checker Schuck's Kragen Chevy Monte Carlo to take the provisional No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car. Worsham is a two-time winner of the NHRA Finals (2001, 2003) and has been runner-up twice (1993, 2004).

"The track is awesome," said Worsham. "It's a championship track and you'll probably see some new records this weekend. Even though we blew the blower off it was still a great pass - the quickest run of my life. To put down a run like that after the year we've had, it was really exciting and a nice morale boost for the team. For the longest time I didn't know what I had run. My crew finally got down there and told me it was a 4.71. It's been a long season and hopefully we can do well this weekend.

"We've been working on this tune-up since about Sept. 1. We lost a couple of runs at Indy due to broken parts, we lost a run at Las Vegas because things kept breaking, but today it all came together and maybe this is a tune-up we can build on for next year."

ESPN2 will carry two hours of qualifying highlights of the NHRA Finals from Pomona Raceway on Saturday, Nov. 11, beginning at 10 p.m. Eastern. Final eliminations will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Sunday, Nov. 12, starting at 7 p.m. Eastern.
