DIXON FINISHES THE SEASON IN SEVENTH PLACE AFTER NHRA FINALE AT POMONA RACEWAY
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 12, 2006) -- Larry Dixon earned a round win Sunday to finish off the 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season. The veteran Top Fuel driver knows even one round win can help make the offseason more effective.
"The car responded the way (crew chief) Donnie Bender and Todd Smith (tuning consultant) thought it would in the first round and that was nice to see," Dixon said. "When the team prepares the car in a proper fashion, the car responds well with quick performance times."
Dixon beat Cory McClenathan in the first round for the third time in four meetings between the two drivers this season. Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to a 4.535-second pass at 323.04 mph to beat McClenathan's 4.543 at 331.28 at the 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California Finals.
The weekend capped off the 23-race season. Dixon finished seventh in the final Top Fuel point standings and is already aiming for higher results in '07.
"I think the last few races were more about trying to figure out what our game plan is for next season," said Dixon, a Van Nuys, Calif., native. "We not only want to figure out what parts to use, but also what people we want on the team and everything else that goes into competing for race wins.
"We have already spent a great deal of time toward being a better team in 2007."
Dixon lost his second round matchup against Brandon Bernstein. Dixon's dragster smoked the tires early, ending in a 10.812 pass at 94.81. Bernstein drove to the win with a 4.496 at 330.07.
Dixon started the elimination round from the No. 6 spot with a 4.508 pass at 331.12 recorded during qualifying.
"I think we had a couple of runs this weekend that probably gave Donnie some confidence. He knows what he's doing," Dixon said. "Hopefully we have a good winter for the crew and the driver. We didn't get the results we wanted this weekend or this season but there were a few good passes in there from time to time. We put some decent numbers on the board but now we need to fine tune everything during the offseason."
