Pomona II: Ron Capps Saturday summary

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2004) - Ron Capps drove his Don Prudhomme-owned green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to a weekend-best run of 4.791 seconds to earn the 12th qualifying position in the quickest Funny Car field in NHRA history Saturday at Pomona Raceway.

Capps opened qualifying on Saturday afternoon by driving his Chevy flopper to a performance of 4.791 seconds at 318.92 mph to claim the No. 12 qualifying spot at the Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals. On his final run of the weekend, Capps recorded a pass of 4.921 at 276.80 after the engine dropped two cylinders.

"We're having a little motor trouble; the car hurt two pistons on the final run and was running on just six cylinders," co-crew chief Todd Okuhara said. "We made a really good pass on the first run. The conditions will be like they were when we ran the 4.79 on Sunday and we have a good baseline."

Capps looks to earn his first career victory at the Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals when he faces No. 5 qualifier Tony Pedregon on the first round of eliminations. Capps is 14-17 in his career versus Pedregon.
