WILK A SOLID 5th ON THURSDAY

Tim Wilkerson put on a solid display in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang, on a somewhat schizophrenic track that presented two personalities to the racers. From the starting line to the 330 mark, the Pomona Raceway surface was stout, but further down track things got a bit dicier, and many competitors were getting little farther than 330 before spinning the hoops. It was clear the beasts had to be tamed on the back-half of the this track and the LRS team made as many last minute adjustments as they could, in order to tame the power beyond the halfway point. Wilkerson's 4.154 placed him in the No. 5 spot after one day, and one lap. Another single session will be run on Friday, followed by two more qualifiers on Saturday.

"Two of our guys, Jeff Jacobs and Rich Schendel, always walk the track before the session, and they made the right call even before the first Funny Car ran," Wilkerson said. "They said it was tight all the way to 330, and then we'd really have to take some power out of it and tiptoe a little bit if we wanted to make it to the finish line. Once we saw a few cars out there, we had all the evidence we needed, so we made all the changes we could at that point. Going for the glory was too much of a crap shoot, so our plan was to just get it down there and we figured that would probably put us right in the middle of the top 10. As a matter of fact, we were actually aiming for a 4.15, so at least we know we can hit our target. Our target might not have been as good as it could be, but at least we nailed it and we have something to work with for the rest of qualifying."
