Haas And Jeter Fail To Improve On Saturday, End Qualifying At 5th Spot At The NHRA AutoZone Winters
POMONA, CA. - The gamble to switch to the engine that set the speed record in 1999 just didn't pay off for the NHRA Pro Stock Truck team of Jerry Haas and Brad Jeter at the NHRA AutoZone Winternationals in the Pro Stock Truck division. The Chevrolet S-10 Pickup powered by a Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins powerplant ended qualifying as the fifth quickest among 32 entries in attendance at the Pomona, Ca.-based, national event.
Haas, the 12-time Car Craft All-Star Award recipient from Fenton, Mo., admitted that the gamble was one that they had to attempt to better prepare themselves for Sunday's final eliminations.
"We had to try something else to provide us with more avenues on raceday," explained Haas, who finished tenth in the 1999 Pro Stock Truck points standings as a driver. "We'll go back to the combination that we had on Friday and that will have us more than ready for Sunday's eliminations."
The 25-year old Jeter, who hails from Greenville, SC, opened Saturday's qualifying with a respectable 7.593/178.38, which was one of the quicker runs of the session. However, his previous run in the right lane that netted a 7.577/178 stood as his best attempt to this point. One driver bettered the mark established by Jeter and that relegated him to third.
Jeter returned to the right lane for his final attempt and failed to improve in less than admirable conditions. He still proved to be one of the quicker drivers of the session with a 7.600/177 lap.
He dropped to the fifth ranking in the 16-truck qualified field. His seeding will pit him against Scott Tidwell in the opening round.
Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday at 11 AM, PST.
