Pomona: Jim Yates final summary

Tire-shake, Larry Morgan End Yates' Competitive Day at Winternationals

POMONA, Calif., Feb. 12, 2006 -- Jim Yates  doesn't have fond memories of
racing in the right lane at Auto Club Raceway at  Pomona, and needed look no
further than Sunday's first round of the 2006 NHRA  season-opening Carquest Auto
Parts Winternationals for  justification.

Yates' SeaRay Boats/Bayshore Power Pontiac GTO shook the tires hard and the car sashayed toward the right guard wall against Larry Morgan, forcing Yates to shut off the engine. He coasted through in 12.061 seconds at 74.36 mph to Morgan's 6.713 at 206.23.

Yates lost the same way at the Auto Club Finals here last November.

"Some guys  were getting down that lane and we've tried different things but
haven't had any  success," said Yates. "We are disappointed.  We didn't
want to leave here  with a first-round loss."

This was the first race for Yates and new  engine builder Bill "Grumpy"
Jenkins.  They'll be back in action in the  second of 23 POWERade Series events --
the Checkers, Schuck's, Kragen Nationals  at Phoenix, Feb. 24-26.
