Winternationals at Pomona Postponed Due To Poor Weather Conditions

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2004) -- Soggy conditions put a damper on NHRA's 2004 season-opener as rain forced NHRA officials to postpone the 44th running of the K&N Filters Winternationals at Pomona Raceway. The event has been rescheduled for February 27-29.

Two-time defending NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon and his Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite dragster made one qualifying pass on Thursday afternoon, clocking a run of 4.662 seconds at 316.82 mph. Dixon sits in the No. 7 position after one qualifying attempt.

Dixon, a graduate of Van Nuys High School in Southern California's San Fernando Valley, will remain in the So Cal area with his wife, Ali, and two kids, Donovan and Alanna, to visit with family and friends. Dixon's father, Larry Sr., won the Top Fuel title at the 1970 Winternationals.

Dixon Jr., who last year became the first Top Fuel driver to win the season-opening event in consecutive seasons, looks forward to spending the next few days in his old stomping grounds.

"On Monday, I'm going to decal the special-edition Miller Lite dragster that we'll run at Phoenix that ties in the 'Great Moments In Miller Racing' theme," Dixon said. "I'll see some friends, have dinner with my mom, go up and see my dad, and then I'll race on Friday.

"The rainout doesn't bother me. If you're going to get upset about the weather, you're going to be upset a lot. You just wait and race. I didn't have any plans for next weekend and now I do."

Racing action will resume at Pomona Raceway on Friday, Feb. 27 with one qualifying attempt. There will be two additional qualifying sessions on Saturday, Feb 28, and final eliminations will begin at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday, Feb. 29.
