Johnson Jr. Still Sixth at Pomona after Friday's Qualifying is Canceled Due To Rain

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2004) -- Friday's only professional qualifying session at the 44th annual Winternationals at Pomona Raceway was canceled as a result of persistent rains that blanketed Southern California.

Tommy Johnson Jr. and his Mike Green-tuned blue Skoal Racing0x2122 Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car recorded a run of 4.930 seconds at 295.21 mph on Thursday's first qualifying session, good enough for the No. 6 position.

"When we saw the rain coming, our main concern was to get in the field," Johnson said. "Right as scheduled the rains showed up. I'm not as nervous as I would be if I wasn't in the show. After a marginal run on Thursday, we're ready to get in a good run with our Skoal Racing Monte Carlo. The new body showed some good signs and we're really excited about this season."

Johnson looks to improve upon Thursday's effort when qualifying resumes on Saturday with sessions at noon and 3 p.m. (PT). Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the K&N Filters Winternationals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Feb. 21, and show two hours of final eliminations coverage beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Feb. 22.
