Winternationals at Pomona Postponed Due To Poor Weather Conditions

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2004) -- Soggy conditions put a damper on NHRA's 2004 season-opener as rain forced NHRA officials to postpone the 44th running of the K&N Filters Winternationals at Pomona Raceway. The event has been rescheduled for February 27-29.

Tommy Johnson Jr., who earned his last No. 1 qualifying award at the 2001 Winternationals, blasted his Mike Green-tuned blue Skoal Racing0x2122 Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 6 qualifying spot on Thursday with a run of 4.930 seconds at 295.21 mph.

The Iowa native plans on heading home to Indianapolis for a few days before flying back to the Southland to complete the first race of the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season.

b^0x001cI'm pretty bummed we didn't get the race in," Johnson said. "I really wanted to get the season under way after not racing all winter. I'm eager to make more runs in the new Monte Carlo. It's kind of frustrating to get just the one teaser run in on Thursday. On the bright side, this will give us extra time to get things perfect for next weekend."

Racing action will resume at Pomona Raceway on Friday, Feb. 27 with one qualifying attempt. There will be two additional qualifying sessions on Saturday, Feb 28, and final eliminations will begin at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday, Feb. 29.
