A Consistent WJ Stays Fourth in Pomona
GM Performance Parts Pontiac racer Warren Johnson continued to show consistent performance during his second qualifying attempt at the Carquest Auto Parts Winternationals in Pomona, CA. Despite increased temperatures that slowed the normally-aspirated Pro Stock cars, The Professor posted the second quickest pass of the day at 6.667-seconds with a top speed of 207.91 mph, keeping him in the fourth position midway through qualifying.
Making this performance even more impressive was the fact that during the team's post-run inspection they found an oversight that had affected the car's performance. As this really had no effect on the team's standing, The Professor preferred to view the experience as part of his young crew's on going education.
"Even though our GM Performance Parts Pontiac probably could have run a 6.64 on that pass, we'll consider this an educational experience. In fact, we unwittingly proved something to ourselves that we had been afraid of trying in the past, so we actually learned something.
"Still, we're in a good position going into the last day of qualifying, and feel we have a pretty good handle on our race car. We'll use tomorrow's sessions to work on our tune-up for race day, and to make sure everyone is properly focused going into final eliminations."
