Jeg Goes Out in Round Two

Jeg Coughlin, Jr and his JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier started race day from the No. 7 qualifying position. The 33-year old two-time NHRA Pro Stock champion posted a time of 6.774 at 203.58 mph. He continues to lead the class with the longest active qualifying streak in NHRA's most competitive class at 36 races.

In the opening round Jeg faced off against Kenny Koretsky. Lane choice
went to Jeg and he took the preferred left lane. Koretsky fouled out and
gave the win to Jeg. Jeg posted a 6.782 at 203.25 mph.

"We put an engine in the car this morning that we had never run before in my car," commented Jeg. "We made the straightest run we made all weekend in the first round and it gave us a firm baseline to tune from going into the second round."

Jeg lined up next to Kurt Johnson in the second round. Lane choice went to Kurt by .029 seconds and he pulled into the left lane.

Jeg left the starting line first by .030 seconds (.033 to .063). The car shook going into second gear and took the starting line advantage away that Coughlin earned. The car was unable to regain the momentum. The win light went to KJ and Jeg posted a run of 6.919 at 202.27 mph.

"We got too aggressive with our set up down low and it hurt us," explained Jeg. "Last year we went out in the first round at the season opener, so we are one round ahead of where we were at this point last year. We will head to Phoenix and look forward to having a better showing next weekend."

ROUND-BY-ROUND:

Round #1: J. Coughlin 6.782 at 203.25 mph, defeated K. Koretsky 6.782 at 203.19 mph. Round #2: K. Johnson 6.768 at 204.88 mph, defeated J. Coughlin 6.919 at 202.27 mph.

POINTS:

Jeg earned 53 points at the NHRA K&N Filters Winternationals. He will enter the second race of 2004 NHRA season in the No. 5 position in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock championship with 22 races remaining. The next event is the Checkers Schuck's Kragen NHRA Nationals in Phoenix, AZ. March 5-7th.
