Dixon Returns to Pomona Raceway Looking for Third Straight Victory at Season Kick-off Event
POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 25, 2004) -- Despite only getting one pass down the historic Pomona Raceway quarter-mile during last weekend's soggy season-opening Winternationals, two-time defending NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon and his Miller Lite team accomplished what they set out to do, qualify for final eliminations.
Now, the three-time winner of NHRA's kick-off race can concentrate on moving up the Top Fuel order as Dixon eyes a third consecutive victory at the Winternationals when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing series resumes February 27-29 at Pomona Raceway.
Dixon drove his Dick LaHaie-tuned Miller Lite rail to a conservative 4.662 second, 316.82 mph run Thursday afternoon, the only run of the abbreviated race
weekend for the defending series champion. The 4.662 effort positions Dixon in the No. 7 qualifying spot.
"Our game plan hasn't changed, it's just the day we're doing it that changed," Dixon said. "On the first run last Thursday we softened the car to make sure we got in the field. You can't win anything if you're not qualified. You never know what the weather will do and we're in the same predicament again, just a week later.
"We'll be a little more aggressive on Friday because we have one solid run under our belts. Then we'll pick up the pace more and more each day."
Following the postponement of the 44th annual Winternationals, Dixon spent a good portion of the day at Pomona Raceway on Monday applying decals to his Miller Lite dragster for the special 'Great Moments In Miller Racing' paint scheme that Dixon's rail will sport the weekend of March 5-7 near Phoenix.
"There car looks very cool. When you see a rendering it's only a few inches big, so to see the life-sized product is neat. I'm happy with the way the dragster turned out. I think the fans will dig it and collectors will like the die cast and the commemorative Miller Lite and MGD cans."
Dixon, a graduate of Van Nuys High School, will spend the rest of the week with his family in the Pomona area servicing his Featherlite motorhome before the 8,000 horsepower ground-pounding action heats up at Pomona.
"It's not vacation time. You still have to work."
