CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES PONTIAC EXCITEMENT NATIONALS NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES NATIONAL TRAIL RACEWAY HEBRON, OHIO FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 1998
FUNNY CAR
CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, is No. 2 qualifier, 5.020/306.85. Etchells is second in championship points to John Force (705-644).
ETCHELLS: "We haven't really been qualifying that well on Friday nights. I think we were pretty conservative, the early numbers were really slow. If they had been quicker we probably could have been No. 1. I guarantee you that on the second half of the track it was the quickest car out there. We haven't gone home on Friday night in No. 2 spot since Phoenix, I think. I'll just smile and go to my room."
RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, is No. 10 qualifier, 5.118/284.90, based on his run in today's first session.
CAPPS: "The Camaro left the starting line great. We were really excited about running here when it cooled down. I think we could have run a low or mid-4.95, but it broke the blower belt. We're trying to figure out why it did that, it was on a good run. It was clear and free from where it usually smokes and shakes. It got out there and quit. I thought maybe the throttle cable broke, but I got out of the car at the end and saw there was no blower belt on it. The bright side of this situation is that it didn't happen on Sunday. We will gather things up and get this Camaro down the track tomorrow and look for some consistency during the day in qualifying."
PRO STOCK
KURT JOHNSON, AC DELCO CAMARO Z28, is No. 1 qualifier, 7.046/195.60.
TOM HAMMONDS, WINNEBAGO MOTOR HOMES/MATCO TOOLS/KENDALL OIL CAMARO Z28, is No. 17 qualifier (DNQ) in his first outing this year in his new Camaro Z28.
HAMMONDS: "We're going to get there. We were extremely light on the clutch. The Camaro still ran pretty good. The numbers on the back half of the track were really good and we had a pretty good speed, so we know the horsepower is there. We have to put a little more clutch into it tomorrow morning, which I think is going to be the best session. (In altitude) it was 50-60 feet worse tonight than it was this afternoon, but we still picked up this afternoon, the track is better, and I'm pretty confident. We have a pretty good shot of making the show. That's a pretty good feat in itself, since it's only the ninth or tenth run on the Camaro. We were 12th in overall speed in that session. If we can get a better number at 60 feet and put more clutch in it tomorrow morning we should be all right." ON YOUR FIRST QUALIFYING PASSES SINCE LAST SEPTEMBER: "I'm excited, not only for myself but for Chevrolet, Winnebago, Mac Tools and Kendall Oil. I want to get out there and do a good job for them. We should be very pleased, but I'm an athlete, I'm never satisfied."
