LAS VEGAS (October 25, 2003) - Von Smith, from Oak Ridge, Tenn., held off all challengers to take the No. 1 position at the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge. The NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge is being held as part of this weekend's NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals.
Smith, currently one of the hottest drivers on the circuit, has gone to three final rounds in the last three races, winning the last event at Dallas. He covered The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway quarter-mile in 6.247 seconds at 228.11 mph.
The battle for the DRO/NMM Pro Mod Cup, which goes to the driver who emerges from tomorrow's eliminations with the most points, will go down to the wire with three drivers still having a mathematical chance to win.
Entering tomorrow's elimination rounds, Hahn, with 1642 points, leads all drivers on the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge, an NHRA exhibition class, in the battle for the No. 1 spot and the DRO/NMM Pro Mod Cup. No. 2 Stott trails Hahn by only 15 points (1627 points). Rounding out the top five is: 3.) Tim McAmis (1450 points), Thomas Patterson (1331) and Mike Ashley (1129).
With Hahn, Stott and Ashley not qualifying, only Hahn, McAmis and Patterson can emerge with the championship depending on how far McAmis and Patterson advance during eliminations.
Who will win the 2003 DRO/NMM Pro Mod Cup? Only time will tell who will step up on the stage when the Awards Ceremony for Pro Mod drivers takes place Sunday evening, October 26, at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
The opening round of eliminations tomorrow finds the following match ups: No. 1.) Von Smith vs. No. 8 Mike Castellana, No. 2 Chip King vs. No. 7 Rick Distefano, No. 3 Thomas Patterson vs. No. 6 Tim McAmis and No. 4 Dennis Radford vs. No. 5 Shannon Jenkins.
NOTES:
1.) It's official, Scotty Cannon is returning to Pro Mod in 2004 in a '53 Studebaker. Currently running as part of Don Schumacher Racing in a Funny Car, Cannon will finish out the current season before making the change.
2.) Tim McAmis, who currently drives the Sanders Motorsports '63 Corvette, will sit out the 2004 season. McAmis owns and operates a chassis building operation in Hawk Point, Mo.
3.) NHRA has released the 2004 NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge schedule. The NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge, an exhibition class, will be contested at the following 10 venues: Gainesville (FL), Houston, Bristol (TN), Joliet (IL), Englishtown (NJ), Madison (IL) (St. Louis), Indianapolis, Dallas and Las Vegas. The Las Vegas event will have a 16-car field, while the remainder will be eight car fields. The AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Shootout will move from Dallas to Las Vegas.
