Team Mopar's Allen Johnson Seeks Boost for Title Hopes at Reading

Johnson aims to gain critical ground in the standings at Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals

Auburn Hills, Mich. -- Only three events remain in the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season, and each one is of critical importance to Mopar Dodge Avenger NHRA Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson. Currently fourth in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship Pro Stock playoff standings, Johnson is in need of a crunch-time win this weekend at the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals near Reading, Pa., to spark the chase for his first title.

Johnson has proven he has the talent, the team and the car to get the job done at Maple Grove Raceway. He posted No. 1 in his Mopar HEMI-powered Dodge Avenger at the previous NHRA event near Dallas. It was the fifth No. 1 Qualifier Award for the J&J Racing driver and team owner, a single-season career high. The Team Mopar veteran and his J&J squad weren't satisfied, spending Tuesday and Wednesday testing in Budds Creek, Md., in order to perfect the tune-up on the Mopar Dodge.

"We're hoping if the air is good enough at Reading that we can set a record and gain even more points," said Johnson, who claimed a win this year at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals and has recorded three runner-up finishes. "Every little bit helps as we try to gain ground on the drivers ahead of us in the standings."

Johnson is shooting for his first career final round appearance and victory at Reading. Those milestones would be welcomed, as they service the Greeneville, Tenn. native's greater goal: bringing home his first Pro Stock championship.

"It's vital that we go out there and really go a lot of rounds at Reading if we want any shot at the championship at all," said Johnson. "It would help if we had a few of the drivers ahead of us go out early. I'd like to face them myself in the early rounds of eliminations, that way my destiny is in my hands. We'll just have to see how it plays out."
