Herbert Endures Loss but Clinches Playoff Spot
In the first round of eliminations on Sunday, Doug Herbert and the Snap-on team lost to Dave Grubnic at Maple Grove Raceway during the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals. Although disappointed with the loss, Herbert and the team were happy to know they had clinched their spot in the 10-driver field for the Countdown to 1 playoffs.
No. 3 qualifier Doug Herbert faced Dave Grubic, the No. 14 qualifier, in Round 1 of eliminations. Herbert's reaction time of .064, compared to Grubnic's .096, gave him a strong lead off the line. However, the SnaponFranchise.com dragster spun the tires toward the end of the run, which allowed Grubnic to get the win with an ET of 3.905 compared to Herbert's 4.225.
"I'm bummed that we didn't get to go rounds today because we were feeling pretty good about this weekend," said Herbert. "We were happy with the qualifying sessions because we've been working on the car's consistency and that was good."
Herbert is the eighth driver to secure a playoff position. Dave Grubnic, Doug Kalitta and Morgan Lucas will compete for the final two spots in the Top Fuel point standings at Indianapolis, which serves as the cutoff for the championship playoffs.
"There must be something about Reading for this team because last year we got into the countdown at this race too," said Herbert." "It feels really good to clinch a chase spot; it's great for the team."
The Snap-on team now returns to N.C. for an off-weekend as they begin preparations for the Mac Tool U.S. Nationals taking place Aug. 27 through Sept. 1. The Labor Day weekend event, which is one of the most anticipated on the NHRA schedule, takes place each year from O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Ind.
