Runner-Up Finish in Reading Catapults Anderson to Championship Points Lead

Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team continued their late-season charge on Sunday, powering to a runner-up finish at the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals in Reading, PA. Starting from the ninth position, Anderson was the class of the field in the early rounds, setting low elapsed time and top speed of the race in eliminating former champions Jeg Coughlin, Warren Johnson and Jason Line before squaring off against noted leaver David Connolly in the final.

In the closest race of the day, Connolly gained the narrowest of victories, combining a .024 reaction time and a 6.580-second run to edge Anderson by one thousandth of a second, a difference of approximately four inches, despite the three-time champion's solid .026 reaction time and 6.579-second pass. Coming on the heels of back-to-back wins in Charlotte and Dallas, Anderson's runner-up finish at Maple Grove Raceway allowed him to take over the lead in the Full Throttle Championship standings, marking the first time since September 2008 that the KB Racing driver had occupied the top spot.

"It was a tremendous day for the Summit Racing team that came within a thousandth of being an absolutely fantastic day," said Anderson. "The final was just a great drag race, and showed what this class is. Dave (Connolly) has been out for two years, but he hasn't missed a beat. It was fun locking horns with him like we did back then.

"I felt good going down the racetrack, thinking it was a great run and that we had a good shot at winning. To be honest, I was shocked when the light didn't come on. It was an outstanding race, with both teams doing an excellent job, and they got us by a thousandth.

"Naturally, we would have preferred to win, but we're certainly happy to leave here with the points lead, especially as we are heading to Las Vegas, where we'll welcome (team owner) Ken Black back to the racetrack. There's a lot of racing left this season, and as close as the competition is in Pro Stock, no lead is safe, but where we are means that if we can run error-free for the last two races, we have a good chance of being the champion.

"I am so proud of my guys and the job they are doing. This KB Racing crew is operating at full tilt, not making any mistakes, and has given me a great hot rod for three races in a row. For example, a lot of our competitors struggled with the track in the first round, but we were able to make a great run and capitalize on their misfortune. We're on top right now, but we have a heck of a challenge on our hands, so it's up to us to keep it going. Fortunately, I think we have the team that can do it, so I'm leaving Reading with a big smile on my face. It was just a great day."
